There are plenty of college checklists that tell you what to buy.
Fewer talk about the practical details that tend to come up once your student is already on campus.
The things that aren't urgent...until they are.
Most of these take just a few minutes to think through before move-in day. And once they're handled, you probably won't need to think about them again.
Until the day you're very glad you did.
One important reminder: every campus is different, and every student is different.
What makes sense for one family may not make sense for another.
Use these ideas as a starting point and think through what applies to your situation.
Know Where They'll Go If They Get Sick
This one recently caught me off guard.
My son was living in New York City for a summer internship when he needed urgent care.
Suddenly I found myself trying to figure out:
-
Which urgent care locations were nearby
-
Which ones accepted our insurance
-
How he would get there
-
What information he needed to bring
We figured it out.
But it would have been much easier if we had looked into those details before he needed care.
Before your student leaves, consider finding:
-
The campus health center
-
A nearby urgent care
-
The nearest hospital
-
Which providers accept your insurance
-
How your student would get there if needed
For some students, the answer may be a short walk from campus.
For others, it may require transportation, rideshare services, or a friend with a car.
Because when they're sick isn't the ideal time to start researching.
Have a Prescription Plan
If your student takes prescription medication, have a plan before move-in.
Think through:
-
Refills
-
Pharmacy locations near campus
-
Prescription transfers
-
Insurance coverage
A pharmacy that was convenient at home may not be convenient at school.
Knowing the options ahead of time makes life much easier.
Understand the Banking Basics
Students don't need to become financial experts overnight.
But they should know:
-
How to access their accounts
-
What to do if a debit card is lost
-
How to transfer money if necessary
-
How to contact their bank
A five-minute conversation now can save a lot of frustration later.
Learn the College Website
This may be one of the most overlooked college-parent tips.
Parent Facebook groups can be incredibly helpful.
But the college website is often where the information originates.
Spend a little time getting familiar with:
-
The academic calendar
-
Housing information
-
Mail and package instructions
-
Student health services
-
Dining information
-
Parking information
-
Important deadlines
You'll be surprised how often the answer you're looking for is already there.
Make Sure Important Information Is Easy to Find
Students don't need to carry around a folder full of paperwork.
But they should know how to access:
-
Insurance information
-
Emergency contacts
-
Prescription information
-
Student account information
-
Travel details
Digital copies stored securely can be especially helpful.
Talk About Communication Expectations
Every family handles this differently.
Some students text every day.
Some disappear for three days and then send a single "I'm alive" message.
Neither is necessarily wrong.
Before move-in, it's worth talking about expectations so everyone is on the same page.
Final Thoughts
Most of these things aren't difficult.
They're simply easy to overlook because they don't feel urgent.
Until they are.
The goal isn't to prepare for every possible situation.
It's simply to handle a few practical details before your student leaves, so life is a little easier when unexpected things come up.
And remember: what works at one college may not work at another.
The important thing isn't following someone else's checklist perfectly.
It's thinking through how these situations might work for your student, at their school, in their environment.
